Evolution of an estuarine valley to barrier-lagoon system promoted by tidal prism change during a transgressive event (Lower Permian, Paraná Basin)

چکیده

In modern marine marginal environments, the coastal morphology directly influences tidal and wave processes. this paper we present an example of ancient zone where change in controlled range. This study focuses on Permian Rio Bonito Formation southern Paraná Basin, major coal deposits South America are located. Sedimentological stratigraphical approaches were applied to cores drilled Candiota paleovalley area. We describe stratigraphic architecture a transgressive event Lower (Rio Formation). Two third order depositional sequences identified, which show differences paleoenvironmental record. lower sequence, associated with infilling incised valley, facies related fluvial currents dominant. micro-tidal inner sea context, range is amplified funnel-shaped valley. upper already evolving linear conditions, evidence processes almost disappear, sedimentation becomes dominated by processes, thus barrier system lagoons swamps established. Our study, besides detailing evolution sedimentary also provides for better understanding origin Brazil coal.

Record of the genus Lycopodites in the Lower Permian of Paraná Basin, Brazil.

The genus Lycopodites, which encompasses the herbaceous forms of the lycopsids, presents broad time and spacial distribution during the Paleozoic in the Northern Hemisphere, with its initial records dating from the European Devonian. As to Gondwanan Paleozoic, to this moment, only Lycopodites amazonica Dolianiti had been reported for the Amazonian Middle Devonian (Curuá Group). Thus, the specim...

Dispersal syndromes of fossil seeds from the Lower Permian of Paraná Basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The morphological analysis of seeds has been an important subject in modern ecological studies, once it provides evidence about the biology and adaptations of the parent plant. However, this kind of study has been restricted to the ecology of modern plants and is rarely used in interpretations of Paleozoic data. From the understanding of dispersal syndromes analysis as an important tool to pale...

The Calculation of Estuarine Turnover Times Using Freshwater Fraction and Tidal Prism Models: A Critical Evaluation

Freshwater fraction and tidal prism models are simple methods for estimating the turnover time of estuarine water. The freshwater fraction method prominently features flushing by freshwater inflow and has sometimes been criticized because it appears not to include flushing by seawater, but this is accounted for implicitly because the average estuary salinity used in the calculation reflects all...

Use of GIS to Study the Evolution of Environmental Change in a Large Estuarine System

Geographic information systems (GIS) have been widely used for examining land/water interactions, such as changes in land cover in watersheds that may influence water quantity and quality in neighbouring surface waters. However, GIS has seen limited application in the analysis of stressor/response relationships within individual basins. The Chesapeake Bay estuary represents one of the largest, ...
